The Pixel 4a may launch in October after a July announcement

Google's Pixel 4a may have been delayed until October, according to a new report. News of the delay comes from recently prominent leaker Jon Prosser who said on Twiter that Google would be announcing the upcoming phone in July, but had set the street date for the phone to October 22. The Pixel 5 may also be pushed back, Prosser says.

The Pixel 4a was initially through to be set for a launch in May, later delayed to June to coincide with the launch of the Android 11 Beta. As of time of writing, the specs are assumed to be unchanged. This means it'll be coming in a single size, powered by 6GB of RAM, the Snapdragon 730, and a camera as impressive as previous Pixels. It was previously thought to launch in two colors, but Prosser says Google is likely to dump the Barely Blue option for just a Black model.

The reason for the delay is obvious, it's the economy. Writing last month, Android Central's Andrew Martonik commented:

The COVID-19 pandemic may be slowing down for many areas, but the economic impacts are massive and will continue to hit some industries much harder than others. Retail sales in general haven't been hit that heavily by the stay-at-home orders and business restrictions, but the effects on discretionary purchases like new phones have been hit as people look more critically at their uncertain financial futures.

Although, by the time the 4a launches, one wonders if Google would not be better served to call this the 5a.
